The bright, cheerful, and distinctive artwork of Mary Engelbreit infuses her children's Christmas picture books with a joyous spirit. These children's Christmas picture books include retellings of several holiday classics, a Christmas alphabet book and the story of a little girl with a very long Christmas list.
Mary Engelbreit's Nutcracker
Mary Engelbreit's latest Christmas picture book is
Mary Englbreit's Nutcracker, a retelling of E.T.A. Hoffman's 1816 German story about "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King." While the retelling touches on some of the main points of the original story, it is the illustrations by Mary Engelbreit that make this Nutcracker story so special.
This large picture book (about 10" X 10") is filled with festive Christmas touches, from the swirls of brightly colored Christmas candy and decorations against a white background on the endpapers to the Christmas party scenes, with their extra Christmas flourishes. In addition, the scenes of the kingdom of Toyland are magical. This retelling is set in the early 1920s. Like the original story, it revolves around a little girl named Marie, her brother Fritz, a magic spell, the gift of an ugly nutcracker, a handsome prince and a mean Mouse King. For details about the story and the illustrations, see my review of Mary Engelbreit's Nutcracker.
