Is your little one apprehensive about going to preschool or kindergarten? Introduce her to Lola in Lauren Child's picture book I Am Too Absolutely Small for School. Lola is sure she is "too absolutely small for school," but her older brother Charlie patiently convinces her otherwise by presenting a series of imaginative and funny reasons she needs to go to school.

I Am Too Absolutely Small for School: Big Brother to the Rescue

Each time Lola tells Charlie she doesn't want to go to school, he patiently gives her an outlandish reason why she should. Lola comes up with all kinds so reasons she doesn't need to go to school, but her big brother has a response for each. For example, Lola says she already knows the things they teach in kindergarten.

However, when Lola tells Charlie that she can already count to ten, he counters with, "What if eleven eager elephants wanted a treat. How would you count up how many treats that would be?" Little by little Charlie is able to convince Lola to go to school, and she finds a friend there.

I Am Too Absolutely Small for School: A Reassuring Story

Through her quirky mixed media illustrations and amusing story, author and illustrator Lauren Child uses humor to help defuse childhood fears about starting school. This light-hearted approach not only results in an entertaining story but also in a story children concerned about starting school will find reassuring. After all, if Charlie has a response for every reason Lola gives, maybe there aren't a lot of good reasons not to go to school.

I Am Too Absolutely Small for School: The Illustrations by Lauren Child

Not only is the story fun, but Lauren Child's illustrations are a delight. With her mixed media artwork, combining photography, watercolors, and collage, Child creates vibrant and highly entertaining illustrations. "The books, brimming with collages, outsize objects and print that wanders over the page, sometimes look like the handiwork of a precocious youngster" (12/28/03, Telegraph.co.uk), and that is a large part of their appeal.

I Am Too Absolutely Small for School: Award Winning Author and Illustrator Lauren Child

British author and illustrator Lauren Child received the prestigious Kate Greenaway Medal in 2001 for her children's picture book I Will Not Ever Never Eat a Tomato, which also features brother and sister Charlie and Lola. One of Lauren Child's most popular characters, featured in both picture books and beginning chapter books, is Clarice Bean. That's Me, Clarice Bean was honored as a 2000 IRA (International Reading Association) Children's Choice book. In 2001, Lauren Child won the Nestlé Smarties Prize Bronze Award for What Planet Are You From Clarice Bean? In 2002, she won the Nestlé Smarties Prize Gold Award for That Pesky Rat.

I Am Too Absolutely Small for School: My Recommendation

I recommend I Am Too Absolutely Small for School for three- to five-year-olds. While it may be of particular interest for the child who wil be starting school for the first time, the humor in the story and illustrations will engage the interest of young children already in school as well.
