Title:
Suzy Goose and the Christmas Star Author: Petr Horacek, who also wrote and illustrated Look Out Suzy Goose and Silly Suzy Goose
Illustrator: Petr Horacek
Recommended for Ages: 3 to 6
Story: On a snowy Christmas Eve, Suzy Goose is on a quest. While the barnyard Christmas tree is beautifully decorated, it lacks one thing, a star on the top, and Suzy Goose s determined to find one. She wants one, "Just like that bright one in the sky."
While the other barnyard animals watch, Suzy Goose tries to capture the star. First, she tries to fly up to the star, but it is too high. Then, she jumps off a fence, to no avail. Jumping off a pile of logs doesn't work either, nor does walking towards the star. All that gets her is - LOST! Then, she hears the honking of the other geese and the sound of the cowbells and is able to retrace her path back to the barnyard. There she is met with a wonderful surprise and her wish for a star on top of the tree comes true.
Suzy Goose and the Christmas Star is a simple story, but what makes it special are the mixed media illustrations created by Petr Horacek, the book's author and illustrator. All of the artwork covers each double-page spread and all of the actions take place against the snowy ground, a mixture of blue and white, and the starry dark blue sky. Horacek's Suzy Goose is a very appealing goose whose feelings are reflected in her expression and in the way she moves through the snow and the sky. Petr Horacek has written and illustrated two other books about Suzy Goose: Look Out, Suzy Goose and Silly Suzy Goose, as well as a number of other children's picture books.
