Groundhog Day, by Marc Tyler Nobleman, is full of interesting photographs and facts about Groundhog Day. The 24-page nonfiction children's book provides a fascinating look at the origins and celebration of Groundhog Day. I’d recommend this children's informational picture book for five- to nine-year-olds.
Groundhog Day - What the Book Covers
The book is divided into nine two-page chapters, each of which includes one full-page photograph and one page of text. Each chapter answers a specific question about Groundhog Day:
- What Is Groundhog Day?
- What Is a Groundhog?
- Where Does the Main Groundhog Day Happen?
- What Happens on Groundhog Day?
- How Did Groundhog Day Begin?
- How Did Groundhog Day Come to the United States?
- Who Else Predicts the Weather on Groundhog Day?
- How Often Is the Groundhog Right?
- What Does Groundhog Day Mean to People?
Each chapter is well-written and informative. The color photos are both entertaining and informative.
Groundhog Day - Interesting Facts
Did you know that Groundhog Day is a tradition rather than a national holiday and that its origins are European festivals, including Candlemas? Today, the main Groundhog Day event takes place in Punxsutawny, Pennsylvania where local newspaperman Clymer Freas first designated February 2nd as Groundhog Day in 1886. Although legend has it that if a groundhog sees its shadow on Groundhog Day, there will be six more weeks of winter, as a weather predictor it’s a bust. These are only a few of the interesting facts in the book. There is also information on groundhogs, on the most well-known Groundhog Day groundhog, Punxsutawny Phil; how Groundhog Day came to the United States; and on how Groundhog Day is celebrated.
Groundhog Day - A Good Read-Aloud and A Good Read Alone
Although
Groundhog Day is a small book, the fact that the photographs are full-page makes them large enough so you can use the book as a read-aloud for an entire class, as well as for one child. The text is easy-to-read for young independent readers and a glossary is included. Every word in the glossary appears in bold in the text when first introduced to cue the reader that the definition can be found in the glossary. There is also a Want to Know More? page with a bibliography of Groundhog Day-related books, websites, and places. The book provides a good introduction to reference books, with its table of contents, organization, glossary, and index.
Groundhog Day and the Let’s See Library
Groundhog Day is one of 18 informational holiday picture books in the Holiday series of Compass Point Books’ Let's See Library of nonfiction books. Ancient Civilizations, Communications, Economics, Farm Life, and Our Nation are the other series in the Let's See Library.
While there are many fictional stories about groundhogs and Groundhog Day, I think many children will find the true story of Groundhog Day to be even more interesting. (Compass Point Books, 2005. ISBN: 0756506484)
