Fiction and Nonfiction for Kids Who Like History

cover art of Countdown historical fiction for ages 9-13 If your middle school and/or upper elementary-age kids enjoy historical fiction, I have seven award-winning books to recommend. The books have each won one or more awards and/or been designated "notable books." The time periods covered are as recent as the 1960s and as long ago as the thirteenth century. Check my Historical Fiction for Middle Grade Readers: Recent Award Winners for an overview and links to reviews of each book. Do you and your kids have any favorite authors or books of historical fiction you'd like to recommend? If so, please post a message at Readers Respond. If you are looking for dramatic award-winning nonfiction about historical figures, teen librarian Jennifer Kendall recommends The Notorious Benedict Arnold by Steve Sheinkin.
