If you are looking for age appropriate books about sex and sexual health for children ages 2-6, kids 4 and up, 7 and up, and/or age 10 to teens, I recommend the four
sex education books for kids by Robie H. Harris. There are more than a million copies in print of her first children's book on the subject,
It's Perfectly Normal: Changing Bodies, Growing Up, Sex, and Sexual Health, first published in 1994, with updated editions in 2004 and 2009. Michael Emberley illustrated that book and the next two:
It's So Amazing! A Book About Eggs, Sperm, Birth, Babies and Families and
It's Not the Stork! A Book About Girls, Boys, Boys, Babies, Bodies, Families, and Friends. Nandine Bernard Westcott illustrated Harris's new book
Who Has What? All About Girls' Bodies and Boys' Bodies.
I was interested in learning more about how Harris came to write the books, how she chose what to include, her reaction to attempts to censor or ban her books and eager to learn more about her new book, so I was pleased to have the opportunity for an interview with Robie H. Harris. It was fascinating to learn more about her research, the role of the illustrations in her books, her views on censorship and the guiding principle she follows in her writing. Have you shared children's books about sex education with your kids? Why or why not? Please share your comments at Readers Respond.
