Disney Pixar Greatest Sndtrk Nov 13th 2011, 10:14 The folks at Disney Pixar have picked tunes from each of their 10 animated films, from 1995's Toy Story to 2009's Up, to create the Disney Pixar Greatest Soundtrack. The Artists The Disney Pixar Soundtracks have, for the most part, been composed by three people over the years: singer/songwriter Randy Newman ("I Love L.A.," "Short People," "Mama Told Me {Not to Come}"), his cousin Thomas Newman (The Shawshank Redemption, American Beauty), and Michael Giacchino (Alias, Lost, Star Trek). Other contributors of original songs include Sheryl Crow, Brad Paisley, and Peter Gabriel. Artists such as Sarah McLachlan, Billy Crystal and John Goodman, Rascal Flatts, James Taylor, John Mayer, Robert Goulet, and Lyle Lovett have performed on Disney Pixar Soundtracks, as well. The Music Peter Gabriel's "Down to Earth" from the WALL•E Soundtrack is clearly the best song on any of the Disney Pixar soundtracks, even surpassing Randy Newman's classic "You've Got a Friend in Me" from the Toy Story Soundtrack and the more recent "Real Gone" by Sheryl Crow from the Cars Soundtrack. The first nine tunes are performed by pop and country artists, while the remaining 16 are orchestral pieces ranging in length from 58 seconds to over seven minutes. The most interesting aspect of the Disney Pixar Greatest Soundtrack CD is what was left off: Randy Newman's jaunty "Strange Things" and heartbreaking "I Will Go Sailing No More" from Toy Story; "Woody's Roundup" from Toy Story 2 by Riders in the Sky; Brad Paisley's songs "Behind the Clouds" and "Find Yourself" from Cars; John Mayer's remake of "Route 66," as well as Chuck Berry's version of the same song, both from Cars; and Louis Armstrong's classic "La Vie en Rose" from the WALL•E Soundtrack. Neither Robert Goulet's version of "You've Got a Friend in Me" from Toy Story 2 nor the Randy Newman/Lyle Lovett duet of the same song from Toy Story wound up on the Disney Pixar Greatest Soundtrack CD, nor did Newman's solo version of "If I Didn't Have You" from Monsters, Inc. Robbie Williams' cover of "Beyond the Sea" from Finding Nemo and Michael Crawford's performance of Hello Dolly's "Put On Your Sunday Clothes" from WALL•E were also left off the Disney Pixar Greatest Soundtrack CD. The Verdict This is actually a pretty good musical overview of the Disney Pixar Soundtracks, giving the casual listener an aural souvenir of their favorite movies. Hard-core fans will probably want to stick with individual soundtracks, but the Disney Pixar Greatest Soundtrack CD will do for everyone else.
