Title:
Favor Johnson: A Christmas Story Author: Willem Lange
Illustrator: Bert Dodson
Recommended for Ages: 6 and up, including adults
Story: For fifteen years, William Lange, a commentator and host on Vermont Public radio, read his short story "Favor Johnson" for listeners at Christmas time. Lange added details about the sights and sounds in the Vermont village where the story takes place that helped his listening audience picture the scene. With the addition of the delicately rendered full page and double-page realistic paintings by Bert Dodson, the reader of the picture book edition of Favor Johnson has an even greater opportunity to imagine being there in the Vermont village on a snowy and cold Christmas Eve.
The story begins with an "old blue pickup truck with shaky headlights" moving from house to house through the village. Dressed in "overalls and an red-and-black checked jacket," old Favor Johnson stops at each house to deliver a small package. What's in the packages and why is he delivering one to each house? The "what" is easy; it's homemade fruitcake. The "why" is a little more complicated and dramatic.
Favor Johnson is the story of a man's love for his dog, the kindness of a neighbor, a gift given in thanks, and kindness and gifts spreading over the years. This poignant tale, in both words and pictures, creates a very strong sense of time, place and community.
