Introduction
If you are looking for children's books that provide straightforward and accurate information about sex and sexual health and are age appropriate, I recommend these four books by Robie H. Harris, three of which are illustrated by Michael Emberley. They are listed in the order of their publication, the first one,
It's Perfectly Normal, for ages 10-teens, and each successive book for a younger age, ending with
Who Has What? for ages 2-6.
Title: It's Perfectly Normal: Changing Bodies, Growing Up, Sex, and Sexual Health Author: Robie H. Harris
Illustrator: Michael Emberley
Length: 93 pages
Recommended For: Age 10 - teens
Contents: This is a comprehensive sex education book, filled with factual information, in words and pictures, lightened by the presence of the comic Bird and Bee and other comic renderings. You may be taken aback by how much the book covers and in what detail, as I was initially, but when I thought about it, there is nothing I would take out. It is all things our kids need to know. I would recommend you read the book first and be prepared to discuss any topics that you have different views on than those in the book, as well as those topics that you think are particularly important to discuss with your tween or teen.
I found it reassuring that, as the two-page Thank You section reflects, the author and illustrator consulted with a great many people in researching the topic and developing the book, including doctors, professors, psychologists and many other health professionals, as well as teachers, parents and students. I see this book being a valuable reference book for your child through both the preteen and teen years.
