ALA Notable Children's Books Oct 13th 2011, 10:04 With thousands of children's books published every year, how is it possible to find the good ones? One of the best resources is your local library. Another is the annual Notable Children's Books List compiled each year by the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC)/American Library Association (ALA). Criteria for Selection The criteria for the list states that, "As applied to children's books, notable should be thought to include books of especially commendable quality, books that exhibit venturesome creativity, and books of fiction, information, poetry and pictures for all age levels (through age 14) that reflect and encourage children's interests in exemplary ways." Award Winners on the List Many of the books on the list are award winning books. Among the ALSC/ALA awards represented on the list are the Newbery and Caldecott awards. The list includes the Robert F. Sibert Informational Book Award winner. This annual award goes "to the author of the most distinguished informational book published during the preceding year." The Pura Belpré Award "is presented to a Latino/Latina writer and illustrator whose work best portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth." Another award represented on the Notable Children's Books List is the Mildred L. Batchelder Award. It is awarded "to an American publisher for a children's book considered to be the most outstanding of those books originally published in a foreign language in a foreign country, and subsequently translated into English and published in the United States." The Organization of the Notable Children's Books List The List is divided into four categories: Younger Readers, Middle Readers, Older Readers, and All Ages. In all, there are generally 60+ books on the list. Each listing includes the title of the book, the author, the publisher, the ISBN number, a brief summary, and any ALSC/ALA award the book has received. While I have not read all of the books, I have read enough of them to be sure that this is a very good list indeed.
