A Writing Kind of Day: Poems for Young Poets cover artIf your tween or young teen is interested in poetry, particularly in writing poetry, I have two books by author and poet Ralph Fletcher to recommend. Poetry Matters: Writing a Poem from the Inside Out and A Writing Kind of Day: Poems for Young Poets are both excellent resources for 8-14 year olds who are interested in writing their own poetry. A Writing Kind of Day is a collection of more than two dozen poems written in the voice of a middle school student. The poems provide both an invitation to write and insight into the writing process. For more of my recommendations, see my Children's Books About Writing Poetry list.
