Horton Hatches the Egg is one of my family's favorite Dr. Seuss picture books. Dr. Seuss's illustrations are so appealing and Horton the elephant is such a sympathetic character that it's irresistable. When a mother bird abandons her nest, Horton vows to take over and hatch her egg. Despite bad weathers and other problems, the plucky pachaderm perseveres. Dr. Seuss uses humor to make an important point about what makes a family. I recommend this picture book for four- to eight-year-olds. Teachers often use
Horton Hatches the Egg when teaching their students about integrity, responsibility, and perseverance.
