If you are looking for a book that will engage middle grade and older readers and provide a broad overview of the history of America and African Americans, I recommend Kadir Nelson's
Heart and Soul: The Story of America and African Americans. This 108-page book, which contains dramatic paintings by Nelson on every double-page spread, covers several hundred years, from the Revolutionary War era to the passage of the Civil Rights Act in 1964 and the Voting Rights Act in 1965 on up to Barack Obama's election as President of the United States. It's nice to have a book that captures kids' interest and provides a context for more in depth study of specific periods of American history.
When the 2012 Coretta Scott King Book Awards were announced, I was pleased to see Kadir Nelson and Heart and Soul listed not once, but twice. This is a good book for a family to read together, share and discuss, in which case they can also include younger children. I have added it to my February Calendar of Children's Books but recommend it for year-round reading.
