This compelling tale of the dangers of not caring for the environment is more serious than some Dr. Seuss books. However, the story of the Once-ler, who destroyed all of the trees in the Truffula forest for material gain, despite the warnings of the fuzzy yellow Lorax, is not all grim. The Once-ler is now remorseful and one Truffla Tree seed has been saved. This picture book effectively covers a serious subject by using humorous verse, with made-up words, and unusual characters. This is an excellent book for eight- to twelve-year-olds. Compare prices. (Random House, 1971. ISBN: 0394823370)
